The Link Between Healthier Brains and the Mediterranean Diet

As we all have come to learn, aging plays a significant role on our bodies. Wrinkles appear, metabolisms slow, hair greys and brains shrink. Along with the physical changes we experience, we are also faced with the increased risk for diseases, strokes or dementia.

For decades, research has indicated that regular exercise, healthy diets, mental stimulation and decreased tobacco use are all contributing factors in healthy brains. However, recent studies have now indicated that the Mediterranean Diet is also beneficial for brain health.

A study published in the journal, Neurology, tracked the diets of 400 Scottish seniors ages 73 to 76 years old over a 3 year period. Through MRI scans and analyzing brain volume, data suggested that those who followed a Mediterranean diet were less likely to lose brain volume as they aged. While more research is necessary to better understand the association, the study revealed that the diet can prevent against Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Studies have also revealed that wine and the Mediterranean diet can make your brain 5 years younger. Additionally, the meal plan can help you to live longer, better manage your weight and lower your risk for cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Where do you start? The Mediterranean diet is relatively easy to follow, involving vegetables, fruits and beans. The diet also calls for poultry and fish along with whole grains. Wine is also a welcome benefit to the Mediterranean diet. The meal plan only limits the consumption of meat, dairy and saturated fats.
