Health and Happiness in a Glass

Not only can a glass of wine help to put a smile on your face after a long day, it also comes with a variety of health benefits. When drinking in moderation, wine can actually be good for your health. The key is to only consume the recommend serving size, which for women is 1 glass daily and 2 for men.

In addition to happiness, there are many other benefits to a glass of wine…

Memory and Cognitive Function
Moderate drinkers have experienced a decreased risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s. Alcohol stimulates the production of the good cholesterol chemical, HDL. HDL works to reduce inflammation and obstruction of artery walls.

Weight Management
When comparing moderate wine drinkers to non-drinkers, it was found that women who drink one to two glasses of wine each day were 30% less likely to be overweight. In order to digest the wine, your body must produce enzymes. These enzymes have been found to burn calories up to 90 minutes after enjoying a glass of wine. Alcohol also helps to elevate your body temperature which can also aid in burning calories.

Heart Attacks and Heart Disease
Thanks to the resveratrol found in red grape skin, wine drinkers are at a lower risk for heart attack and heart disease. The polyphenol helps to prevent damage to the blood vessels as well as reducing heart inflammation. It has also been shown to help stop the conversion of molecules to fat. All of these benefits can help reduce your chances of developing cardiovascular disease.

Type 2 Diabetes
Red wine is also beneficial to diabetics as well. The polyphenols in red wine can regulate blood sugar levels and reduce insulin resistance.

Stroke
Due to the increased HDL creation moderate wine consumption can also reduce stroke risk. Moderate wine drinkers are also 50 percent less likely to suffer blood clot related stroke. However, heavy drinking can lead to increased medical risks.

Cancer
There have been a number of studies that link wine with a reduced cancer risk. Specifically, wine is linked with the prevention of ovarian, prostate and colon cancers. Red wine is noted as reducing the chance of colon cancer by 45 percent.

Longevity
According to studies, wine drinkers have a 34 percent lower mortality rate than beer drinkers. The abundance of antioxidants and resveratrol improve longevity and insulin sensitivity.

Bone Strength
Increased bone strength is another benefit to wine. A study recently found that red wine helps to improve bone density in older men, therefore reducing the risk of developing osteoporosis.
